Illegal Street Racing in Houston Puts Innocent People at Risk

Although there are legal outlets for drivers who want to street race against other cars, many still choose to race illegally on Texas streets and highways. The racers that Fox 26 spoke with said that there are multiple meet ups for races on any given evening in the Houston area. The drivers usually meet in a parking lot late at night, and then take to the streets for the respect of being “the fastest one.” The racers explain that racing is an adrenaline rush, a dangerous and seductive activity. For many, it starts out as a hobby, and then grows into full-blown obsession. As thrilling and exciting as it may feel to the racer, illegal street racing is extremely dangerous, and many racers and innocent victims have been injured or killed as a result of this reckless driving.

Auto shop owner Faisal Rahman understands how enticing street racing can be, and has organized police supervised street racing events to give racers a chance to have their fun legally. But Rahman acknowledges that illegal street racing will continue to happen because many racers do not want to pay a fee and wait for hours to get their turn, if they get a turn at all. Also, his events are not every day, so the illegal racing continues.

Sadly, many racers are in denial about how risky their reckless driving behavior is. They claim they are careful, and that they are driving as safely as they can. Some justify their dangerous driving by claiming that getting into a vehicle at any time is a risk, period.
